Daman and Udvada: History Beckons

Explore the historical allure of Daman and Udvada, the cherished landmarks of the Parsi community, beckoning you to uncover their rich past.

Our last trip to Daman was more than a decade ago, and it was a spiritual pursuit confined to the boundaries of the place we were staying in. This weekend, we experienced Daman differently and also loved Udvada, the spiritual centre for the Parsi community.

Daman has two parts: Nani (small) and Moti (Large) Daman. Nani Daman with the Devka beach is a watering hole for neighbouring states. The beach is dark sand with some gravel thrown in and the water very uninviting. However, Nani Daman also has a lovely fort with a small church inside overlooking the bay. Do visit the Hotel Marina for a good meal.

Moti Daman has a lovely cathedral and two nice churches to visit, which are all over 400 years old built by the Portuguese. The Moti Daman fort and the lighthouse are also very nice and a day and night visit

The visit to Udvada and Iranshah fire temple was the highlight of the visit. Do read about Atash Behram ( Victorious Fire ) and its history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udvada#The_Atash_Behram

Udvada is 20 minutes away from Daman and offers some lovely Parsi cuisine at Teshtar as well as good old Irani Bakeries.

Daman - 15

The next time you visit Daman, you could experience a different spiritual high :-)
